June saw Deanery High School host the first round of the 2015 Youth Speaks public speaking competition. Our team, comprising Eve Wane-Smith (Chairperson), Aimee Lunt (Speaker) and Sophie Lyon (Vote of Thanks) went up against teams from Standish High, Hawkley Hall and Deanery.

Our chosen topic for this year, clearly indicated by the title, was ‘Simply Put: Success’. With a title like that, and having won the 2014 Wigan schools competition, there was no pressure for the current team, then…

They rose to the challenge and truly embodied their theme of ‘success’. Drawn second, they gave a fantastic performance in which each team member simply shone. Eve’s lively welcoming speech led to Aimee’s passionate and skilful exposition, concluded by Sophie’s earnest Vote of Thanks.

After tense deliberation, the judges returned to award Shevington a well-deserved win against some excellent teams and topics. Aimee Lunt was also given the individual award for Best Speaker, continuing a successful run of individual awards for Shevington Youth Speaks team members.

This victory shows outstanding success for our pupils, reflecting their hard work and diligent preparation. We have won the Wigan round in 2011, 2014, and now 2015 – a hat trick that places us on par with Abraham Guest’s previous record of 3 wins. A huge well done to our team, who now head on to the Zone Final of the competition in early 2016. More on that to follow…
