On Saturday 5th March, our Youth Speaks team – Hollie Paxford, chairperson; Aimee Lunt, Speaker; Sophie Lyon, Vote of Thanks – travelled to Frodsham Community Centre to compete against three other teams in the District Final of the 2015-16 Youth Speaks public speaking competition.
After a tense competition, in which the standard of speeches from all the teams was incredibly high, our team were delighted to be named as the winners! To add to their success, Hollie and Sophie were awarded Best Chairperson and Best Vote of Thanks respectively. This is an amazing achievement – especially for Hollie, who was standing in for regular chairperson Eve Wane-Smith, who was unable to attend. Hollie had just over two weeks to learn the opening speech!
Terry Hogan – former organiser of the Youth Speaks event for Wigan Rotary club and now a governor of Shevington High School – was also on hand to support the team. Terry was delighted with the result, as his beaming smile shows!
Personally, I am continually astounded by the commitment, dedication and sheer professionalism of our Youth Speaks teams. This is the third time since 2011 a Shevington team has reached the District Final, and the second time we have won. Can we go even further?
The team go on to compete in the Regional Final, to be held at the prestigious Catrin Finch Centre in Wrexham next Sunday. We will all be rooting for them to speak their way to even greater success!
