Youth Speaks District Final

Forest Hills Hotel, Frodsham

Sunday 1st March 2020

Following their stunning victory in the Wigan heat on 3rd February, our Y8 Youth Speaks team (Hannah Morgan-Hillam – Chairperson, Grace Lackie – Speaker, Layla Ramsdale – Vote of Thanks) headed down into the windy depths of Cheshire to compete in the District Final of the 2020 Youth Speaks competition, run by Rotary International.

Comprising the winning teams from regional heats across the North West, and being the penultimate round before the National Final, our team knew the pressure would be on. The girls worked very hard in the weeks following the last heat to improve and refine their speeches. The path to the final was not smooth, as illness had befallen Grace, the main speaker – would she be well enough to take part?

Thankfully, Grace was indeed well enough, and, with Hannah and Layla, gave a very strong performance. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be their afternoon and the team didn’t get through to the National Final…however, they were rewarded with certificates for participation and a well-received prize from the Rotary Club.

Well done to the girls for all their hard work. Mr Lunt and Mrs Gleeson, plus Hannah and Layla’s parents, were on hand to support the girls, and were incredibly proud of their conduct – a true credit to both themselves and Shevington High. A huge thank you to their parents for all their support, and to the Rotary Club for once again facilitating this challenging event – it really does help the pupils who participate to flourish and grow.

We are determined, as ever, to seek more success in the 2021 competition.  Onwards and upwards!
