On Tuesday, 32 children went to Leigh Sports Village to participate in the Wigan and Leigh Cross Country championships. The conditions were the worst seen in recent memory; boggy, muddy, cold and raining! Despite this, the athletes all competed extremely well. Our main highlights of success on the individual side were from the following:
Lewis Bryers, Y7, finished a very credible 8th Place.
Sam Nash, in the same race, finished 14th.
The race of the Y8 and 9 boys held more success with Harry Scarbrough finishing 2nd and Tom Scarbrough finishing a close 4th.
The Y8/9 girls race saw Sarah Elsden finish 4th with Beth Wilkins finishing 17th.
The Y10/11 boys race saw our best finish of the day with Tim Hartley winning this race quite comfortably. Sam Bryers finished an excellent 10th, racing against older boys with Daniel Adamson finishing 18th and Oliver Edwards claiming 20th Place. At one stage in the race, we had 3 boys in the top 5 places before George Scarbrough unfortunately pulled out due to injury having being placed 5th.
The Y10 /11 girls race saw Sophie Elsden come 4th in a very tough race with some excellent runners. Lauren Wheatley finished 7th in the same race, racing against girls who are much older .
Our group successes were the Y7 boys who finished 3rd in their race. (Sam Nash, Lewis Bryers, Tyler Hughes, Jacob Sharrok, Josh Lemin, Naill Povall)
The boys overall won their event very comfortably and given the size of our school compared to some that are 2 and 3 times our size, this is a massive achievement. The children were a credit to the school and themselves both on and off the track.
