The RE and History departments at Shevington High School organised a Holocaust focus day for Year 9 students to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2015. Holocaust Memorial Day is on the 27th January every year and marks the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
On the 19th January GCSE RE and History classes took part in three different sessions were they learned about the ghettos, Anne Frank and memorialising the events of the holocaust.
In the afternoon we were honoured to be able to welcome Eve Kugler into our school. Eve shared with us her testimony of events as a Jewish Holocaust survivor who lived in Germany during Nazi rule. Our students listened carefully and were both shocked and moved by some of the events Eve recalled.
All of our students found the day extremely valuable, some commented on how meeting Eve made the events of the holocaust seem much more real, especially as they had the opportunity to ask her questions. Our students now have the important job of helping to keep, ‘the memory alive’ and we hope that they share Eve’s story with their families and friends.
A big thank you to Eve for making the long journey to Shevington, and also to our Year 9 students for representing the school so well.
